Wife’s Property

The three religions share an unshakable belief in the importance of marriage and family life. They also agree on the leadership of the husband over the family. Nevertheless, blatant differences do exist among the three religions with respect to the limits of this leadership. The Judaeo-Christian tradition, unlike Islam, virtually extends the leadership of the husband into ownership of his wife. The Jewish tradition regarding the husband's role towards his wife stems from the conception that he owns her as he owns his slave. This conception has been the reason behind the double standard in the laws of adultery and behind the [...]

Fasting For Medical Patients

Patients are exempt from fasting. But some do decide to fast. For physicians treating Muslim patients, the following guidelines are suggested. Diabetic Patients: Diabetics who are controlled by diet alone can fast and hopefully with weight reduction, their diabetes may even be cured or at least improved. Diabetics who are taking oral hypoglycemia agents along with the diet should exercise extreme caution if they decide to fast. They should reduce their dose to one-third, and take the drug not in the morning, but with Iftar in the evening. If they develop low blood sugar symptoms in the daytime, they should break [...]

Do not change your life

If you have the following qualities, do not change your life and be firm on them until your death, these qualities are: 1- If you are powerful and happy with your faith, secure and feel comfortable with the attentiveness of your heart. If you are satisfied with the sustenance of Allah (may He be Glorified and Exalted) to you, glad with your good deeds, and concerned with your mistakes and sins. 2- If your heart is filled with the desire to meet Allah (Glory be to Him) and see the great reward which He prepared for His Righteous Servants. If you move with [...]

What’s the best way to teach Arabic to non-native students?

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] Question Peace be upon you, I submitted my papers in the center of the university in which I teach to take part in teaching Arabic to non-native speakers. I understand that teaching Arabic to non-native speakers is not like teaching native speakers, therefore, I wish you to guide me by giving me some ideas that will help me to deliver the lessons easily. Let it be known that those who will learn from me will learn the basics, such as letters, the pronunciation of words, diacritics, deictic words, and other stuff. Answer Peace be upon you, `Abdullah. First of all, I would [...]

Should we believe in Jinn Stories that seem too farfetched?

Question As-salamu `Alaykum warahmatullah wabarakatuh (May Allah's Peace, Mercy, and Blessings be upon you!). One of the weirdest stories I've ever heard is about a man whom was guarded by a Jinn that admired him. It caused him trouble whenever he went to see a girl for marriage. Like, Traffic accidents would happen to him or to one of his brothers, or one of the machines which he was in charge of at his work would start burning. One time, the Jinn set his whole house on fire except two copies of the Glorious Qur'an that were above the desk never got [...]

What should I study in regard to Fiqh, Hadith, and `Aqidah (creed)?

Question Peace be upon you! I want to study politics and Islamic economics, and I know I should have a strong Shari`ah knowledge. I have memorized the whole Qur'an and would like to know what I should study in regard to Fiqh, Hadith, and `Aqidah? I've looked at the curriculum of the Institute for Preparing Preachers in Egypt, and I found that the books they study are "Bulugh Al Maram" in Hadith, "Ma`arij Al Qabul"  in `Aqidah and "Manar As-Sabil" in Fiqh. What is your opinion in this curriculum? I would rather replace the book "Manar As-Sabil" with either a book in Shafi`i Fiqh or a general book on Fiqh such as: "Fiqh As-Sunnah," so what do you think? [...]

Question I was reading in a book that a person has to stop thinking sometimes to bring about peace of mind. So, how can I stop thinking? By trying to stop thinking, I am thinking about the way to stop thinking. What is the effect of this method if it is true? Thank you. Answer As-salamu `Alaykum warahmatullah wabarakatuh (May Allah's Peace, Mercy, and Blessings be upon you!) I do not think that anyone can stop thinking particularly if you command him to do so, and I challenge you to stop thinking right now about a blue bear. Perhaps the intention of [...]

What is the treatment of frequent thinking and preoccupation with it?

Question As-salamu `Alaykum warahmatullah (May Allah's Peace and Mercy be upon you)! What is the treatment of frequent thinking and preoccupation with it in Shari`ah science and in psychology? I mean managing things, analyzing words and (past , present, and expected) attitudes and engaging in it. Answer Dear valued brother, As-salamu `Alaykum warahmatullah (May Allah's Peace and Mercy be upon you)! As for the cure of your case, we should describe it scientifically because in recent years science has advanced in this area and formulated rules and regulations not just speculations and analyses that are not based on scientific grounds.
